I Promised I Wouldn't (01.05.01)
A New Year, and as purists are only too happy to point
out, a new millennium. Looking back at 2000 it's hard not to notice just
how turbulent a year it was. And most of it surrounded the courts.
The court, more or less, told loggers it was fine to
beat up filthy hippies. They also told our Mayor and council that the
chip facility was a bad idea. Thankfully all those involved have shown
almost heroic ability for selective hearing. Otherwise there would have
been a lot more hippie assaults and Corinne, Paul, Wendy, Cheryl and Rick
could have given us a better Christmas present than the blatant slap in
the face that was delivered at the last council meeting. Damn, I promised
myself I wouldn't start the New Year with a woodchip rant, ahh, who am
I kidding, let it begin!
Due to circumstances beyond my control I was unable to
attend the last clowncil meeting. But per usual I was able to catch it
on the delightful cable10. After it was over I felt like most people in
this town. It was a volatile mix of disgust, disbelief, frustration, sorrow,
fear, and helplessness. In fact I was so perturbed that it took 5 straight
days of the fire channel (again on the delightful cable 10) to calm me
down. I know I know, I hear you thinking "what do you expect?".
well honestly, I expected better. I mean think of it, what better Christmas
present could Mayor and Council have given Squamish than to finally admit
the chip facility should go somewhere else?
In my dream world I envisioned many people doing many
things. I envisioned Corinne finally listening to her voters and admitting
the chip facility should probably find a better location. I also had visions
of Paul Lalli being rescued from a mountain home where, for the last year,
he has been drugged unconscious while his evil twin does nothing but mindlessly
defend every nonsensical notion from the head of the table. But alas what
we got was incredibly shifty behavior better suited to an alley knife
fight.
The highlights include Paul being upset with people turning
this into a political issue? Just so we're clear: Any time you blatantly
refuse to listen to your voters, it's a political issue. Every time you
say "lets move Squamish forward", then purposefully act otherwise,
it's a political issue. And Every time you (as a council) are taken to
court because you've made a mistake, it's a political issue. As for Raj
and Shelly, be strong, and know the people are behind you.
Well Happy New Year indeed eh'.
