It would appear that Squamish is not alone in the current baby epidemic that is sweeping through the community. The colossal baby boom seems to be affecting enough people that Hollywood is now inundating us with baby culture films. Playing on the success of recent films such as the great Knocked Up and Juno comes the latest Baby Mama staring the fabulous Tina Fey.
I certainly enjoy Tina Fey’s work and was really hoping for the best with this one. Even with the dreaded Saturday Night Live (SNL) stigma that comes with any Lorne Michaels produced film. Which, let’s face it, usually consists of turning a mediocre five minute sketch into an hour and a half of unnecessary drivel.
While Baby Mama is certainly not the worst by SNL standards, this movie remains the weakest of the baby culture movies of late.
Tina Fey plays a successful corporate woman who decides she wants a baby and she’s not going to wait to find a man to do that. Unable to conceive herself, she hooks up with a surrogate played by Amy Poehler. From there you have the classic Odd Couple matchup with Tina’s successful/smart mixed with Amy’s redneck/moron. Then there’s the possible romance with Juice Store owner Greg Kinnear.
The cast is quite all-star but in the end there just isn’t anything in the film that elevates it to more than a half decent sitcom episode. If your big screen movie time is limited, this one is definitely a renter.
