Pick Your Poison and Pedal (09.09.05)
Sometimes you just can’t stop the best. Case in
point, Lance Armstrong. Here’s a guy, who gets cancer and goes on
to dominate the toughest road race in the world. Of course there’s
the jealous tallest poppy crew trying to water down his successes, but
conspiracy theories aside, you can’t help but admire Lance’s
awe inspiring moxie. Not only is he the first to win the Tour du France
seven times, but he was also the first to have his name emblazoned upon
what has become the fundraising fashion of the 00’s. A simple yet
fantastic idea of a yellow rubber armband with a small slogan and proceeds
going to charity.
Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for the armband
to suffer the same fate as the 90’s ribbon with countless copy cat
colors watering down the message pool. Proving once again that it’s
not easy keeping a fundraiser idea fresh. That is, anywhere else but here,
as fundraising ideas are just another area that Squamish tends to kick
ass in. In fact, one of the craziest events is celebrating it’s
5th anniversary this weekend: the GK Ripper AKA "Puke or bleed".
Here is an event that really hits the nail on the head of what Squamish
is all about. It’s tough, there’s something for everyone,
and it’s all about helping someone in need.
Brilliantly conceived, the GK Ripper is a mountain bike
event that has in fact evolved into an official foundation providing financial
assistance for individuals in our community who have been seriously injured.
How cool is that.
The true brilliance of the event however, is the bringing
together two remarkable yet different biking disciplines. At the start
you have those riders who enjoy the burning pain of a grueling climb up
a mountain. Then at the top the torch is passed to those preferring the
heart-in-the-throat freefall down the mountains endless supply of roots
and rock. The unique nature of this event has brought out some all-star
talent which always makes for a fantastic viewing.
But the race itself is just part of the delicious GK
Ripper pie. There are in fact not one, but three ways to have a good time.
The best and worst of which would have to be the pre-party on Saturday
night. This extravaganza pre-evening is traditionally as extremely fun
as it is dangerous. It’s easy to get caught up in the community
spirits and before you know it you’re living the event’s nickname
even before it even starts. This year’s shenanigans appear to be
just as nutty with live entertainment as well as a bachelor / bachelorette
auction. Then for those left standing on Sunday there’s the silent
auction / after party. So if you’re around this Sunday come ride,
come watch, come celebrate and donate. As well, it must be noted that
if you can’t make it out for whatever reason, donations can also
be made at the sparkling new Tantalus Bike Sop beside the Movie Theatre.
Ripper it up.
