Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Director: Tim Burton
Cast: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman
Rated:18A
117 minutes

With all my heart I hope Tim Burton, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter live long long lives and make many, many more movies together. Hit after hit, these people can simply do no wrong and this downright fantastic film is further proof. I truly prefer not knowing anything about movies before I see them and while I was intimately familiar with No Country I knew nothing of the Sweeny Todd story and my goodness it’s phenomenal.  This of course is an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's popular musical that has been no less than 28 years coming. For those who simply can not sit through a musical, this one might just grab you. The film quickly finds its stride and once the mayhem starts it doesn’t stop.

Johnny Depp once again plays the dark freak and Helena Bonham once again plays the dark freak’s dark freak girlfriend. Plus, since every movie is only as good as its villain, here we have one of, if not the best, Mr. Alan Rickman. Once again Alan plays someone you look forward to seeing killed. I’ll spare you the plot only to say what is obvious, the blood flows free from the demon barber on Fleet Street.

When you get right down to it, both these movies are more than worthy of the hype they are receiving and if you only see one or two a year, these are the best to be shown in quite a while. Enjoy them while you can.
