Kung Fu Panda

Director: Mark Osborne, John Stevenson
Cast: Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Ian McShane
Rated: PG
88 minutes

Oh great. Another freaking celebrity voiced animal movie from Pixar. Dear god let it sto… Hang on, what’s this? They finally got it right?

Those who have had it up to here with crappy animated animal movies have nothing to fear. King Fu Panda has none of the inane pop culture references or horrible pop songs that plague the rest. All you have here is a great king-fu movie that just happens to be animated.

The celebrity voices (must be stopped!) are perhaps the only annoying thing since no one wants to spend time thinking – where do I know that voice? Jack Black, not surprisingly, voices the fat, slacker panda. Then there are the five kung fu masters: Mantis (Seth Rogen), Crane (David Cross), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Tigress (Angelina Jolie), and Lucy Liu is the Viper. Then there is Dustin Hoffman as their Master. The one that kept bugging me was the evil villain voiced by Ian McShane from the fantastic Deadwood series.

The plot is your basic no frills kung-fu fare. The chosen one is not what anyone expected. The chosen one then has to win over disciples and eventually face the evil villain. There is no bogging down with unnecessary plot lines and the animation is top notch with little to no slowing from the beginning to the end.

Wee ones might be scared by some of the few dark scenes but otherwise this movie is definitely one the whole family can enjoy (I can’t believe I just wrote that - but it’s true).
