Finally! After no less than three weeks of our theatre
showing only sequels, we finally get to see an original film. Now, I don’t
know if it’s that all the other movies were so bad that this film
looks so good, or if it would stand on it’s own in a field of gold.
Either way, ‘Knocked Up’ is a movie I can finally recommend.
Right off the bat, I am a big admirer of Jude Apatow. His brief yet fantastic
TV series ‘Freaks and Geeks’ and ‘undeclared’
were truly gems.
This time out the delightful Apatow regular Seth Rogen plays a 20something
Canadian stoner knucklehead who, as the title insinuates, ‘knocks
up’ hottie career woman Katherine Heigl in a one night stand.
What follows is the tale of making a relationship work while bringing
a baby to term.
The entire cast is brilliant with Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann offering experienced
couple points of view and of course the motley crew of Apatow regulars
that make up Seth’s friends and roommates.
I am very picky when it comes to relationship movies since they traditionally
involve one spouse trying to change another and all the plot points revolve
around lying. Here, everyone is refreshingly open about who they are and
what they offer.
Perhaps the best part is that this is a family comedy without any sign
of Steve Martin. Instead this film offers an honest look at relationships
and pregnancy and its damn funny.
