Iron Man

Director: Jon Favreau
Cast: Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges
Rated: PG-13
126 minutes

It has not been good times for blockbusters. Last year’s crop was embarrassing and before that we had the summer of sequels. Now we find us ourselves at the dawn of another blockbuster summer and so far it’s looking good.

Iron Man is the latest movie to be made from the Marvel comic book (insert warning bells). While those bells are warranted, I assure you this time it’s a good one.

This movie excels if for no other reason than the delightful Robert Downey Jr. Here he plays his trademark playboy drunk who is also a billionaire scientific genius at the head of the largest US weapons company. Quickly he finds himself at the other end of some of those weapons and – long story short- he try vows to change his ways but his company has other plans.

Now, what would any super hero be without a super villain played by Jeff Bridges. I’m sorry but since The Big Lebouski it’s just impossible not to see him as The Dude. Luckily, this time the Dude is evil and that is ok.

Another plus is while most action comic films interject pointless love stories, Iron Man thankfully handles that quickly and entreatingly by Gwyneth Paltrow.

As for the effects. The first thing that comes to mind is how weak the Transformers robot fighting was. If you want know what huge robots should look like kicking each others ass in the streets, look to Iron Man.
