Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Director: Guillermo del Toro
Cast: Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Jeffrey Tambor
Rated: PG-13
110 minutes

Well, well, isn’t this a fine time to be a movie enthusiast. At this very moment there is not one but dare I say, four great films playing. I’ve already tooted the great horn of WALL-E and the much anticipated Batman film opens today. But right now I’ll tell you about a great film called Hellboy II.

Hot off his phenomenally successful Pan’s Labyrinth (see it!), Guillermo revisits his beloved pet project of the Hellboy series. The thing that immediately becomes obvious is that this man has an absolutely fantastic imagination. Each and every scene oozes with creativity and in an action adventure film that is oh so important.

Ron Perlman once again don’s the horns as the demon who was raised to be one of the good guys. He’s monstrously huge softy with a love of kittens, babies, not to mention cigars and huge handguns. Hellboy is the muscle in the secret government paranormal outfit that includes his fire starter girlfriend, a highly intelligent fish man, and a German clunky 60’s style robot. Together the gang takes on what can only be called a visually delicious array of adversaries including the golden army.

The last quarter of the film unfortunately gets a little bogged down in romance but that is the most nitpicky thing that could be said about a film that is an absolutely pleasure to watch. Oh, and if you’re worried you didn’t see the first, don’t be. While the first one was good, this one is great.
