There is only so much you can legally expect from a spoof
movie, especially one from the Scary Movie/Date Movie crew. Back in the
Hot Shots, Top Secret days, spoof films had laughs with the added help
of strategically placed pop culture references. With Epic Movie all you
have is the references. Amazingly enough, this is a film (if you can even
call it that) completely strung together with references to pop culture
with a staggering lack of creativity or humor.
But life is too short to focus on the bad so lets focus
on the good. I’m glad this film exists if for no other reason, than
we can see that Crispin Glover makes a great Willie Wonka. As well he’s
forgiven for lining his pockets with dirty money because heavens knows
he doesn’t make a dime from his fiercely independent films like
the one about the midget conjoined twins with cerebral palsy (other must
see films: Rivers Edge and Ruben & Ed). Plus there is Fred Willard
who can shine no matter how much crap he’s surrounded by.
Unfortunately, the immature wank fest goes on and on
but, if nothing else, is forgivingly short. If there must be a time and
place for this movie I would suggest if you’re ill, suffering from
a massive hangover, and/or have access to powerful over the counter medication.
Otherwise you’ll just shake your head thinking, only in a country
where they elect George Bush twice could this be a guaranteed money maker.
